Saving Baby
March 28th, 2007
There was a tragic story on the news the last night about how a learner driver clipped the gutter and ploughed into a group of pedestrians waiting at a bus stop. Unfortunately one young woman was killed and an 18-month-old toddler is fighting for his life.
However, another factor in this story got me thinking. Apparently, there was a 6-month-old in a pram among these pedestrians who were hit, and when his mother realised that they were going to be hit, she picked up the whole pram and with all her strength hurled it out of the way. Sounds insane, but this is actually what saved the baby’s life.
So it made me wonder - what would I do in the same situation? I think that I would probably pick Charley up and hold her tight and turn my back to the car in an attempt to shield her from the impact. But would that save her? I don’t know. The smart thing to do would probably be to risk a lesser injury and throw her out of the way in the same way that mother did - but would I have the guts.
Food for scary thought. Here’s hoping I never find out.

How awful
I don’t know if I’d have thought that quickly…
Here in Victoria a little girl was killed by a neighbour backing her car out for work. The girl was 3 days off turning 2, and had followed her brothers outside to play (at 8.30am must have been about to head to school). Mother had no idea she was outside. Awful stuff.
Such a sad story. I don’t even think that we could predict what we might or might not do in such a situation. When confronted with something like this, our natural instinct would always be to protect our child before ourselves, in what ever way was possible at the time. That’s the strength of love
It’s funny how when things happen like that instinct just kicks in without you thinking. Let’s hope we never have to find out. I hope you’re feeling better madmadmummy.
