A good gap?
August 27th, 2007
Cause I am looking at having my second, I have been thinking lately about the best gap between siblings. And this afternoon, I had a little bit of a preview when I picked up my nephew from school, who is just over three years older than Charley.
Now I am not sure if it is just because they are cousins and don’t live together, but they get along really well and he is 6 and she is 3 - so maybe this will be a good gap if Charley is going on 4 when the new baby is born?
Would be interested to hear what other mums think about age gaps….

I have a mix of age gaps and I find the bigger age gaps easier to handle because the older child is somewhat independent.
I have:
Between 1 & 2 - 2 yrs
2 & 3 - 3 yrs
3 & 4 - 2 yrs
4 & 5 - 13 mths
The 2 yr age gaps weren’t so bad but this 13 mth gap is killing me because they are both so dependent on me.
When I had my 3rd, my boys were 5 and 3 and it was just easier. The boys were toilet trained, sleeping through, were REALLY keen to help (although the novelty wore off after a while) and could understand that mummy was tired or the baby needed mummy without the jealousy.
Closer age gaps mean they get along well but they also fight just as well where as a bigger age gap they’re into different things. For instance my 8 yr old and 3 yr old don’t fight so much because they’re at different stages and into different things and they don’t clash.
And I best stop rambling and go and pick my son up from school lol
WOW its exciting contemplating when to add to the family - wishing you lots of luck.
We have 19-20months between our boys,
Jayden and Isaac have 20mths between them
and Isaac & new baby will have 19mths.
Isaac is much ‘younger’ in a lot of ways than Jayden was when Isaac was born, but we love the close gap. If we were to re-think things with #3, I probably would have waited until Isaac was older - he just seems to young to about to become a big brother.
Good luck, Zoe
My two boys are 24 months apart. It was very full on the first year looking after two close together but now I really love the age group as they can do the same things and they get on really well. Having said that it’s a lot of work and a 3-4 year gap would have been great as at least my eldest would have been toilet trained!
Good luck and keep us up to date with progress!
